Shonuff = Assuredly I Say = Verily Verily

One of my favorite things in life is when you can know something for sure.  Like, for sure-for sure.  I mean, I totally know what this is all about.  Shonuff is one of my favorite words because of this.  Now, I didn’t make it up myself.  I stole it fair and square.  I’ve been trying to use it regularly for almost a year now.  Just because verily, or assuredly, doesn’t sound quite right coming out of my mouth, and “shonuff” with a little swagger sounds great.  Now that I’ve actually written that out, I might end up changing my mind.  But no fear, I’ve already registered this name, so the Blog will stay as is.

Orgins of Shonuff:

I stole this from Jesus.  Well, not really, but he’s played Jesus a couple times at local churches and programs.  He’s actually my brother-in-law, Eric.  This guy isn’t perfect, but for a chewed up guy trying to become a man like me, he’s a definite role model.  Man Cards are issued by Eric.  Shonuff is one of his regular terms.  I’m not sure where he got it from, but no matter, I like using it, and it makes sense to me now.

Purpose of the “Shonuff Blog”:

To provide an outlet for me, and others, to share with the world all kinds of things.  These things must be true to make the cut, thus we’ll be following the title.  I’m hoping to provide a place for me to share, for people to comment, for others to contribute, and above all, for Jesus’ name to be glorified.  This will happen in several different formats, through blog entries, comments, pictures, videos, opinions, testimonies and just about anything else that might come along.

Goal of Shonuff Blog:

To get people thinking.  Plain and simple.  If for nothing else than to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ, challenge the same and witness to the lost.

In the third chapter of Matthew we read the story of Christ’s baptism and the beginning of his public ministry. Verse 17 in that chapter describes how a father feels about his precious son. “This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him,” just about sums up how I feel about my son, Ben.

Ben has taught his father much. He discovered his faith and the importance of living a life based on a strong belief in God and His Son, Jesus Christ, long before I did. In fact, Ben’s faith helped show me the way to my own. I thank God for my son Ben. He is a true believer, faithful in all he does, and a wonderful husband and father as well. I hope to follow the example he sets.

It is difficult to explain what this “walk with Christ” is like to someone who has never had the privilege of sharing this trail with his Lord and Savior. This trail is long, sometimes steep and rocky, and it is not heavily traveled, but the view along the way is no less than spectacular! This metaphor of a backcountry trail is particularly meaningful to Ben and I. You see, as Ben’s father, I was able to introduce him, when he was first learning to walk, to hiking mountain trails. I remember those wonderful afternoons in the fresh mountain air, with the sunlight dancing down through the treetops high above. Sometimes, Ben would ride on my shoulders but he always wanted to get down and walk the trail himself. When he did, every stick, leaf or rock along the way became a point of interest, sometimes ending up in his mouth (it wasn’t the he was hungry, but rather interested in what the thing tasted like). What a joy it was to walk behind him then and it is no less a joy to walk behind him now on this trail of faith that leads to the Kingdom.

Let me say it again, because I have not said it often enough in the past, “This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him.”
